Streaking Sharks Clip Dolphins

Sharks 3, Dolphins 2

MANILA - In the battle of the fish, Charlie Labrador outdueled Joseph Orillana to lead the streaking Manila Sharks to a season-series sweep of the Cebu Dolphins, 3-2 on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Manila won its fourth straight game behind another sterling performance from Labrador. The nation's top right-handed hurler tossed a complete game five-hitter, gave up just two runs, two walks, and struck out six. It was a welcome respite for Labrador who was coming off a no-decision in an eleven inning marathon against Taguig in his previous outing.

Cebu meanwhile has dropped three of its last four, no thanks to an offense that has been struggling. In each of those three losses, the supposedly potent Dolphins offense has scored three runs or less.

The left-handed Orillana also went the distance, gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits, walked one, and struck out seven.

The Sharks struck quickly in a wild opening frame when Rommel Roja led off with a single. Elcid Angeles followed with another single as Roja attempted to go from first to third only to have third baseman Tony Olayvar mishandle Orillana's relay to give Manila a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks padded their margin with two more runs in the fifth when Virgilio Roxas led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and came all the way around to score on Miguel Baroque's passed ball. Edward Landicho followed with a double and Bambol Servo made it 3-0 with a run-scoring single.

Cebu finally touched Labrador in the sixth on two-out rbi-singles by Jon De Ubago and Olayvar after Corcuera drew a lead-off walk. But Olayvar was cut down on an attempted steal to end the rally.

The Dolphins threatened once more in the eighth, but akin to the third and fifth innings, Cebu stranded yet a pair of runners. For the game, the Dolphins tied a season-high with nine men left on base, a sure-fire way to end rallies.
